About this class
Music Production is a hands-on course in contemporary digital music production using Logic Pro, the professional digital audio workstation widely used in commercial and independent music production. The course introduces adult learners to the core competencies of music production: recording, editing, working with virtual instruments, mixing, and shaping finished tracks for release.
Instruction is project-based. Each learner builds real songs across the series, beginning with foundational techniques (tempo, click tracks, basic recording) and progressing through more advanced work (working with virtual instruments and loops, editing vocal takes, mixing across multiple tracks). Learners work on their own computers under the instruction of a working music producer who runs an active recording studio and was trained by Tony and Grammy Award-winning mentors. Sessions consistently pair concept introduction with immediate application: demonstration followed by guided practice.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the course, learners will be able to:
- Configure a music production session in Logic Pro, including tempo, time signature, and routing
- Record and edit audio and MIDI tracks, including vocal takes and instrumental performances
- Work with virtual instruments, loops, and audio samples in a multi-track environment
- Edit vocal recordings: cleaning takes, comping, and balancing levels for clarity
- Apply foundational mixing techniques: volume balance, tone shaping, and stereo placement
- Build finished tracks from concept through final mix that are ready to share
- Listen analytically to commercial music and identify production choices
Methodology
The course follows a learn-by-doing pedagogy specific to music production: each new technique is demonstrated by the instructor on real material, then immediately practiced by learners on their own work. Listening exercises develop the producer's ear in parallel with technical skill.
Topics we cover
- Setting up a session: tempo, time signature, and the click track
- Equipment fundamentals: routing, monitoring, and signal flow
- Recording techniques: capturing audio and MIDI cleanly
- Working with a keyboard controller: playing virtual instruments
- Vocal recording: technique and capture
- Editing vocals: cleaning takes, comping, and pitch work
- Sound shaping: tone, level, and dynamic control
- Mixing fundamentals: balance, EQ, and stereo image
- Working with loops, samples, and digital instruments
- Listening like a producer: deconstructing finished tracks
Who it's for
For adults who want to develop real working skills in digital music production — recording, editing, mixing, and finishing tracks they can share — using the same professional tools (Logic Pro) used in commercial studios. Whether you have made music before or are trying it for the first time, the course meets you where you are.
