About this class

Digital Presence is a course in the design and management of a personal online identity, drawing on the disciplines of personal branding, communications, and digital media studies. The course is built for adult learners who want to take intentional control of how they appear online — across social media, personal websites, and any other public-facing channels — and who want to understand both the creative and the safety dimensions of being visible online.

The course is hands-on and project-based. Each session focuses on a specific competency — setting up a social media presence with intention, creating and posting content, building a simple personal website from free tools, curating an online identity, or managing privacy and digital footprint — and learners work on their own profiles and projects in real time. Guest speakers from content creation, digital media, and online privacy fields share how professionals build and protect their online identities.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, learners will be able to:

  • Articulate a personal online identity that aligns with how the learner wants to be seen
  • Set up and manage social media profiles across major platforms
  • Plan, create, and publish original content (text, images, short video) on social media
  • Build a simple personal website from free tools such as Google Sites or Carrd
  • Audit an existing digital footprint and make informed decisions about what to share, retain, or remove
  • Apply privacy and security practices that protect personal information online
  • Recognize the relationship between digital identity and digital risk

Methodology

The course follows a project-based pedagogy: learners do real work on their own digital channels in every session, with instruction structured to support immediate application. Privacy and digital safety are integrated throughout rather than separated as standalone content.

Topics we cover

  • The concept of digital presence: why intentional online identity matters
  • Social media with intention: setting up and using profiles that represent who you are
  • Content creation: what to post, how to post it, and finding voice
  • Personal websites: building with free tools
  • Curation and identity choices: what to share publicly, what to keep private
  • Privacy and security: digital footprint, account safety, and risk mitigation
  • Photography and visuals for social media
  • Online storytelling: sharing interests, passions, and personality
